2008 Ohio Fuel Cell Symposium

Yesterday and today, the Buckeye Bullet 2 has been on display at the Ohio Fuel Cell Coalition's Fuel Cell Symposium. The event showcases the fuel cell technology available here in Ohio, and related industries. Some of the companies present there are:

  • The Edison Welding Institute, who helped with the welding of our chassis is there
  • GrafTech, the company who made the bipolar plates inside of the Ballard Fuel Cell Stack
There was also an academic poster session, where several areas of fuel cell-related research going on here at Ohio State and other Ohio universities was showcased.

BB2 Featured in Electric/Hybrid Trade Publication

Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Technology International is an annual trade publication for the, get this, electric and hybrid community. Well, in the 2008 edition, the Buckeye Bullet 2 is featured in the "University Focus" section. They made particular mention of our sponsors, which help us to be able to do what we do... make a fast fuel cell car. (You can check out all of our awesome sponsors here)

You can read the article by clicking on the pages below, or by going here. If you are interested, you can read the entire publication by signing up here (I believe it is a free subscription).

BB2 Mentioned on ESPN's Sportcenter

The BB2 was mentioned recently with regards to the upcoming football championship game against Louisiana State University. Specifically, they used it to compare the speed of the two teams...
The transcript reads:

This past August, Ohio State Engineering students did something quite special. They piloted a Hydrogen Fuel Cell powered streamliner racer over 200 mph, called the Buckeye Bullet 2, marking a historic milestone for alternative fuel vehicles. You may not be able to teach speed, but apparently you can teach students how to create it. With LSU looming in the BCS national title game, some might say their next project should be transfering some of that speed to the Buckeyes football team. As Tom Rinaldi tells us, they may not have to...

Ford Fusion 999 in Popular Mechanics Article

The December 2007 issue of Popular Mechanics features an article on the Ford Fusion 999.

Ford is one of our biggest sponsors and continues to support us in our endeavor with the Buckeye Bullet 2. A lot of the topics covered in the article apply to both of our cars since we truly partnered up to make both vehicles function as best as possible. We are also mentioned in the beginning of the article:

"By building better race cars, automakers are ultimately able to deliver better production cars. So, in 2005, when students at the Ohio State University Center for Automotive Research approached Ford Motor Company about collaborating on a hydrogen fuel cell car capable of setting a land speed record, the automaker jumped at the opportunity. Just months before, the same group of innovative OSU scholars set a land speed record (315 mph) for electric cars. The Ford/Buckeye hydrogen fuel cell collaboration, the 999 Hydrogen Fusion, was unveiled this past July."

-Popular Mechanics, December 2007
(You can see the article where they broke the 200mph barrier for fuel cell cars here)

imix from WOSU

A little while back I put up a preview of a video being produced by WOSU. Well, they completed the piece, which has been airing all this November. They now have a streaming copy of it available to watch on their website (in real media and windows media formats). Note that the part on the BB2 is split up between 2 parts of the show, the first segment, and then then 3rd of 4th segment.

http://www.wosu.org/imix/

From the site:
“iMix” is the first of many programs WOSU will produce for Ohio State to air on the Big Ten Network. “iMix” (Interactive Mixed Media) features a fast-paced television magazine format. The show is produced by WOSU Public Media, and licensed by The Ohio State University.

“iMix” documents engineering students from the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) as they attempt to break the land speed record for a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. It covers the history of Buckeye Bullet 1 (the previous electric battery powered vehicle), the idea and research behind Buckeye Bullet 2 (the hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicle), and visits to Speedweek and the World Finals at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Featured on "Green Wheels" on Equator HD

Earlier this summer, an episode for the show Green Wheels, to be shown on Equator HD (which is available on the Dish network) was shot with the Buckeye Bullet team working on the BB2. They have put a preview up on their website, which shows us testing out at TRC, and the very first time the BB2 moved under its own power. Nearly an entire episode shows the BB2 being worked on over the summer, and is the final episode in the series.
